Monthly Newsletter Starting October 31, 2017, I'll be publishing a once-a-month newsletter from this site. Like my blog and podcast, the newsletter will feature news, views, links, and information for the low-carb diet community. Unlike my blog and podcast, the newsletter will come straight to your email inbox on the last day of every month. Expect humor, wit, and sarcasm (when deserved). Updates on my life and waist circumference. Recipes. Oh, and from time to time, the newsletter will … [Read more...]

Calculating Skaldeman’s fat burning quotient
When I started this blog many years ago, I was eating a "low-carb" diet. Now I'm eating a "low-carb high-fat (LCHF)" diet. The change in terminology is significant. The goal is not to replace excessive carbohydrate with excessive protein, but with quality fat. I'm trying to get more than 70% of my daily calories from fat. A useful tool for deciding what to eat on an LCHF diet is "Skaldeman's fat burning quotient." The quotient is named after Swedish diet guru Sten Sture Skaldeman, who … [Read more...]
My Ketonix has arrived (updated)
Unboxing of my Ketonix 2015 I opened the mailbox today to find that my Ketonix 2015 Blue had arrived from Sweden. The arrival of a new gadget is always a cause for celebration. In this case, I was also relieved. I ordered the Ketonix via the company's website on April 23, selecting the regular "letter" type shipping, so I figured it would take a while to get here. But as the days, and then the weeks, went by, I started to wonder. It's a long way from Sweden to Michigan (as my great great … [Read more...]

Net carbs defended
Calculating "Net Carbs" In following my low-carb, high-fat (LCHF) diet, I've always been guided by the concept of "net carbs." This is the notion that carbohydrates from fiber don't get used by the body to raise blood glucose levels, so therefore fiber content can be subtracted from total carbs. What's left, the net carbs, are what the LCHF dieter counts and pays attention to. Or so I have believed. I've lost weight by keeping my net carb intake to around 30 - 35 grams per day. For … [Read more...]
Book collects the evidence behind ketogenic diets
If you're into the science of low-carbohydrate eating, and haven't already done so, you may want to pick up a copy of A. Simmonds' Principia Ketogenica: Low Carbohydrate And Ketogenic Diets - Compendium Of Science Literature On The Benefits. The Kindle version linked to here is currently selling for 99 cents. I'm not sure how long it will be available at that price. It's a fantastic deal -- over 300 pages of hardcore nutrition science for less than a buck! (Update: the price has gone up, but … [Read more...]
